Gritty, Brave & Nuanced: My Review of Mirror Mirror by Saif Hyder Hasan starring Minissha Lamba

960x540-1-3 (1)

Disclaimer: The Play is a Psychological Drama with twists, So I would not be giving away anything from the Story in the course of this Review.

IMG_3979 (1)Play begins with a conversation over the Phone between Minal (Minissha) and a friend of hers where in she confides how her identical twin sister, Manya has affected her Life from the on-set and just how much she hates her.

Then we see, The Genius of Minissha as an actress play out 13 different characters right from her childhood to eventually enjoying motherhood and how her Life shapes up in between.

Minissha shows her acting prowess by effortlessly getting into the character ranging from that of a Child to her adult self, with apt mannerisms and voice modulation while playing out 13 different characters showing the Life journey of Minal and how situations and relationships were affected by her identical twin’s existence.

Her Pitch was perfect and very clear, which is quintessential for a theatre artist. She sang to exclaim certain instances to add melodrama to the conversations, which were sometimes hilarious and sometimes emotional. All this while, maintaining her grip and poise, she effortlessly transitions dialogues to singing melodiously hitting the notes in her own unique way.

The Lighting was very effective and the props were all placed and used well. the Only Problem i had was with the Mirror (Screen) placing, i was seated in the 2nd row and it was not visible to me what it was playing.

Another Problem that i could identify was the voice over of a Character, Kunal. The Artist who was giving the voice over lacked voice modulation and the intensity which matched Minissha’s on stage capability.

Apart from the two things, not much that i could find fault at. The Writing keeps transitioning smoothly from the point of view of Minal’s depiction dabbling between humour, revenge, taboo, wickedness and  infatuation. Saif Hyder Hasan sir needs to be appreciated thoroughly for an effective story telling in a story which is filled with complexities and cynicism.

The Music and effects are on point too.. But it’s Minissha which grabs your attention from scene 1 to the last scene in the solo play, which in itself is no mean feat for a play with runtime of close to 75 minutes.

All in All, i found #MirrorMirror to be a brilliant roller-coaster blend of emotions, humour and grey filled with a nuanced seasoned performance from Minissha. a Viewer would be pleasantly surprised by the prowess she shows in variety, voice modulation and singing. Kudos.

My Rating: 4 Stars on 5.

“Can miles truly separate you from friends… If you want to be with someone you love, aren’t you already there?” ~ Richard Bach

You Came into My Life with a Resplendent smile without Leaving a Trace

I have always adored you but My Friendship i Never Thought you’d embrace

I Love The Special Understanding that we can at times share

I Smile Heartily by Way of Your Unique way of Showing that you Care

As I Try to Pen My Thoughts and Memories of Us

It brings Millions of Smile on my Face which may be Obvious

A Friend Like You is what I look up to when My Mood needs a Lift

Knowing that You are Reading it is a Treasure & My Precious Gift

You are a Ray of Sunshine, in a World Full of Deceit, Fakes and Grey

The Glow caused by Your Company, will Brighten the Gloomiest of a Day

I think we May Use Each Other’s Opinions, When we are feeling Weak

Help the Other Spring back to Action when Others make us feel Bleak

Detractors in Life are Plenty, Unnecessary Critics should never really matter..

More People Love you, Smile because of you, So Live Life on your own terms as you are its own Master!

Thank you for Trusting me, Loving me ever since you took Notice of me

You are Blessed with a Wonderful Heart and if you seek me there I shall be

I am grateful to God that I felt the Warmth and the Love in that Embrace

For Now I’ve seen the Most Beautiful Person on Earth with an Angelic Face

If I get a Few Wishes from God, A Few may be My Own  but I’d definitely make one for you

I’d ask the One Above for His Blessings, Happiness & Prosperity in Everything that you do!

“There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.” ~ Jane Austen

When did i get So Lucky?

cats love gif

You Shine in the Night and make the moon look mellow..

Your Eyes sparkle like Gold Bars which bloom in Yellow.

Your Curves so Hot, Your Lips So Soft and Red

The Question of Where should i not kiss you strikes my head

Why are you So Beautiful? Why do you always take my Breath away?

When did i get so Lucky? How are you so Perfect in every which way?

It’s that look in your eye, it’s the smile on your face

That makes me feel complete and in a better place.

And I’ll always remind you that I am yours alone
Today and forever until we’re reborn

Then We’ll find each other as we are connected by an unseen chain
and i will meet you and we’ll love eachother all over again..

The Blessing

“Why am i Still Living? What Wrong did i do to deserve such a Life?” asked Abhimanyu to his most loved Deity Lord Ganesha. Abhimanyu, A 9 year old Boy who now lived with his Maternal Grandparents in Nasik after losing his Entire Family when he was just 3, including his Parents to the infamous Earthquake in Bhuj, Gujarat. He miraculously was found unscathed while the Bodies of the Dead were being recovered from the Debris.

Thereafter His Custody was given to his Maternal Grandparents, who Loved him and tried to Raise him well, But He had undergone a lot of Trauma for a 9 Yr. Old Child and Depression, Fear of Acceptance and in the Process was losing out on the Ability to comprehend things. He would often stay away from Peers and had little or No Real Friends but for His Favourite Deity: Lord Ganesha

48e7be74924f777b0f96e7e81765d88d

So Everyday, He would visit the Ganesha Temple and talk for hours with the Shrine. He would complain about his Life and how he felt like a Burden to his Ailing Grandparents who lived with Bare Minimum Earnings but yet try to Give the Best of Everything to him. Lord Ganesha would simply smile back at him, or so he thought and often this resulted in him pleading and yelling at the Lord.

This day was different though, After he returned back from the Temple. He helped his Grandma make the flour for the Chapati, Ate with them, Drank the Milk and went to Sleep. But he kept tossing and turning and was unable to sleep, So he got up to have some Water. There he saw Lord Ganesha holding a Glass of Water for him. Ganesha said “Drink this my Friend!” Abhimanyu took the Glass from him and Drank the same. The Water tasted different as if soaked in Sweet nectar.

Abhimanyu said “I Hope this isn’t Sweet Poison to take me with you! I can’t go right now, Don’t want to leave my Nana-Naani at this age like this. I want to Do something in Life for them, before you take me away.” Ganesh ji smiled back and said “I know! Am not here to take you, You are my Dearest Friend and have lots to do in this Life for yourself, Your Family and The Society at Large. I just came to speak to you. One on One.. Man to Man talk”

Abhimanyu laughingly said “Ganesha you are only Half a Man and i am just 10 (Was his Birthday). So the Man to Man talk doesn’t really fit.  But Yeah, i would love to talk to you.” So Ganesha held his hand and took him outside the House where a Bright Red Bajaj Chetak was waiting for them. Lord Ganesha took the Handle and asked Abhimanyu to jump on to the back seat. Then Ganesh ji’s Scooter flew and  took him back in time to Bhuj just before the Earthquake and showed him a Visual of How His Parents saw the Ground shake and they vehemently ran to him, put him in a trunk with a Small Hole and took him to the Open Garden of their home as mortar collapsed and gave the Trunk a full blown push before they collapsed under the Debris.

Abhimanyu’s whole world spun in front of his eyes and he realized how much love and affection he was showered to when he was a Child. Ganesh ji asked “You really think you have a Bad Life? Come with me.” Then Ganesh ji took Abhimanyu to another Distant place where Abhimanyu saw Young Orphans being drugged, abused and Organs being removed and forced to become beggars by Mafia syndicates. Abhimanyu asked “You’ve opened my Eyes, My Lord but Why do you allow Butcherism by Mortals?” Ganesh ji replied “I Don’t play a Role in anyone’s Karma. The Consequences of Every Action is a Reaction. Their Karmic score will determine their Life ahead.”

Now Ganesh ji parked his Scooter atop a Tree in a nearby Forest and told Abhimanyu to ask Questions which he was carrying in his Heart. He would like to answer them all today.  Abhimanyu fell short of Words initially but then asked Ganesh ji “What Wrong did my Parents and Family do to deserve such a Death and why am i still Living? What is the Purpose of My Life?” Ganesh ji replied “Karma as i said is the Answer my friend, Not just of this Life but some are a Part of One’s Past Life too. You are living because you died at a Tender age in your Last Life when you tried saving a Baby Elephant from being Eaten alive by a herd of Crocodiles. The Mother Elephant was crying for Help as She was caught in a Deep Swamp and you heard it.” The Whole scene played out in front of them where a Young Boy jumped at the Head of a Crocodile and Threw Stones at them so the Baby Elephant got a Free side and he stomped his way out of the herd of Crocodiles but The Child fell in the Water in the Process and got Eaten by the Crocodiles.

Ganesh ji said Life is all about Karma and You are my Friend and Chosen one, Channel your Energy towards the Greater Good for People and see how this Life that you sometimes Curse would become the Most Beautiful thing in the World. Abhimanyu said “Will you Guide me?” Ganesh ji replied “Always!”

Abhimanyu that Night at a tender age found his Purpose in Life and a Friend for Life: Lord Ganesha.
